How to Book Your Theory Test and Apply for Your Learner’s Permit in Ireland

We'll walk you through the process of how to apply for a learner’s permit, step by step, making sure you're well-equipped to navigate the road ahead.

Beginning the journey to getting your driver's license in Ireland is an exciting milestone, but it requires careful planning and preparation. Before you can hit the road as a learner driver, you'll need to pass a theory test and apply for a learner's permit. In this post, we'll walk you through the process of how to apply for a learner’s permit, step by step, making sure you're well-equipped to navigate the road ahead.

Step 1: Prepare for the theory test

The theory test assesses your knowledge of road signs, rules, and safe driving practices. Here's how to prepare:

  • Study the Rules of the Road: Familiarise yourself with the Rules of the Road booklet, which covers essential information for safe and responsible driving in Ireland. You can access the booklet online or purchase a physical copy from a book shop.
  • Take practice tests: Practice makes perfect! There are lots of online resources and mobile apps to take mock theory tests, simulating the actual exam format and timing, that will prepare you for the real thing.

Step 2: How to book your theory test

Once you feel confident in your knowledge, it's time to book your theory test appointment:

  • Visit the National Driver Licence Service (NDLS) website: Navigate to the NDLS website and select the option to book a theory test appointment.
  • Choose a test centre: Select your preferred test centre from the available options.
  • Select a date and time: Choose a convenient date and time for your theory test appointment. Be sure to plan ahead and book well in advance.
  • Pay the booking fee: You can then pay the fee for booking your theory test appointment online – cost to book a car is €45.

Step 3: Head to your theory test appointment

On the day of your theory test, make sure to:

  • Bring any necessary documentation: Bring valid identification (e.g. passport or Irish public services card) and your booking confirmation to the test centre.
  • Arrive early: Arrive at the test centre well in advance of your scheduled appointment to allow time for check-in.
  • Take the test: The theory test consists of multiple-choice questions and a hazard perception section. Read each question carefully and take your time. There are 40 questions to complete within 45 minutes and you must get a minimum of 35 correct to pass.

Step 4: How to apply for a learner’s permit

After successfully passing your theory test, it's time to apply for your learner's permit:

  • Complete the application form: You can get a learner permit application form from the NDLS website or your local NDLS office. You can also complete the application form online
  • Gather required documentation: Gather any necessary documents, including proof of identity, proof of address, and your theory test pass certificate.
  • Visit an NDLS Centre: Schedule an appointment at an NDLS centre to submit your application and provide your photograph and signature.
  • Pay the application fee: Pay the applicable fee of €35 for your learner permit application using the online payment portal or at the NDLS centre.

Step 5: Receive your learner licence permit

Once your application is processed, you'll receive your learner's permit by post within a few weeks.

Congratulations! You're now officially a learner driver, ready to embark on the next stage of your driving journey.
