Congratulations! Once you have passed your Driving Test, Here’s What to Do
Here’s everything you need to know about getting your licence and N plates and becoming a more experienced driver.
You’ve passed your driving test! Now that you've earned your driving licence, you're ready to hit the road and embrace the freedom and independence that comes with driving. But what’s the first step to getting on the road? Here’s everything you need to know about getting your full licence and Novice plates (‘N plates’) and becoming a more experienced driver.
How to get your full licence after passing your driver’s test
Apply for your full licence
After passing your driving test, you'll need to apply for your full driving licence through the National Driver Licence Service (NDLS). You can schedule an appointment online or visit a local NDLS centre to submit your application.
Bring the right documents
When applying for your full licence, you'll need to bring the following documents:
- Learner permit previously known as a provisional licence
- Proof you have successfully passed the driving test in the category that you are applying for within the last two years
- Public Services Card and/or verified MyGovID
- Proof of address – dated within the last six months. If your current address differs from the one you provided when you applied for your Public Services Card
- Proof of residency in Ireland – if your place of birth and nationality are outside the EU/EEA
- Medical Report – fully completed medical report form dated within one month, if required
- Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) training, if required
- Initial Basic Training (IBT) – successfully completed, if required
- Application fee of €55. You can pay by credit card or with debit card. Did you know, if you are aged 70 years or over you are exempt from paying the fee.
Displaying your N plates
As a newly qualified driver, you are required to display N plates (novice driver plates) on your vehicle for a period of two years after passing your driving test. N plates serve as a visual indication to other road users that you are a novice driver / newly qualified driver.
How to get and display your N plates
You can buy your N plates from lots of locations, either online or in most petrol stations. Make sure to choose N plates that comply with legal requirements – they should be the proper size, shape and colour so they can be easily recognised by other drivers.
Once you have your N plates, they need to be displayed on the front and rear of your vehicle, just like your L plates when you were a learner driver.
Further Develop Your Driving Skills
Even though you’ve passed your test, it doesn’t mean your learning is over. There’s still plenty of ways to gain experience on the road.
If you have any manoeuvres that you’re uncomfortable with, consider taking additional driving lessons or practicing with a more experienced driver to build your confidence.
Always remember to stick to the safety regulations and rules of the road. Observe speed limits and avoid distractions like mobile phones or loud music while driving.
So, you’re now a proud novice (N-plate) driver. But learning doesn’t stop just because you’ve passed your driving test and our ‘Decision package’ helps you keep your skills sharp. With Aviva Driving School we offer a tailored six-lesson programme to help you further develop your driving skills and tackle areas where you may lack confidence.
