From 31st March 2025, there are some key changes to motor insurance in Ireland that all drivers need to be aware of. To help keep our roads safer, the government now requires you to provide your driver number, and the driver numbers of anyone named on your policy, when you buy or renew your car insurance.
This new rule is to ensure the Motor Insurance Database is as effective as possible. The database is updated daily and helps the gardaí quickly identify uninsured drivers/vehicles.
What’s Changing?
You will need to provide your driver number and the driver number of anyone named on your policy when you buy or renew your motor insurance. Insurers cannot issue a policy without this information.
Why is This Happening?
This change supports the Irish Motor Insurance Database. The database contains records of millions of vehicles and drivers and helps the gardaí detect uninsured drivers/vehicles.
What do I need to do?
When renewing or taking out a new car insurance policy you will have to provide your driver number to your insurer.
I’ve already taken out my car insurance, do I need to provide my driver number now?
It will only be necessary when you next renew your motor insurance policy.
Where Can I Find My Driver Number?
You can find your driver number in Section 4(d) (highlighted in yellow on the image below) on your Irish driving licence or learner permit.

My driving licence is from the UK/EU/elsewhere, what should I do?
