It is a common feature in the Irish car insurance market that insurers will recognise and reward safe driving behaviours through a discount on their insurance premiums. There are two main ways that this discount is generally accessed:
1 - The No Claims Discount (NCD), or No Claims Bonus (NCB) that is awarded to those individuals who take out a motor insurance policy in their own name and do not have any claims
2 – Recognition of Named Driving Experience
The named driving experience discount differs from the traditional No Claims Discount (NCD), or No Claims Bonus (NCB) as it is for individuals who have not held or do not hold a motor insurance policy in their own name. The person seeking the named driver experience must have a history of driving as a named driver on someone else’s motor insurance policy. However, the discount is generally the same in its application, it’s a discount that car insurance customers receive if they haven’t made a claim for a set period of time.
How does Named Driving Experience work?
You will be offered a discount on the cost of your car insurance for every consecutive year you have been a named driver on a car insurance policy without making a claim. The longer your consecutive history of being a named driver without a claim, the less of a risk you are and the bigger the discount is likely to be. The level of discount awarded differs between insurance companies.
At Aviva we can apply a discount of up to 50% on your car insurance premium for your named driver experience.
To be eligible for a discount based on your named driving experience you must not have held an insurance policy in your own name in the last two years and you must have a minimum of one full years consecutive named driving experience.
The following additional criteria will also apply:
- The full period for any discount must be consecutive years (i.e., no gaps in cover). We can only provide a quote based on your most recent driving experience.
- You must be currently named on a private motor insurance policy. If you have a history of named driving experience but are not currently a named driver, we will not be able to provide you with a discount.
- You must have completed your named driver experience within the Republic of Ireland, and
- Your named driving experience must be earned on a private motor vehicle. We are unable to recognise driving experience from any other motor insurance policies.
Terms and conditions apply and any application for motor insurance is subject to normal underwriting and acceptance criteria.
How do I prove my driving experience?
Named driving experience letters are not automatically issued by insurance companies. You will need to request this from each insurer you were a named driver with. If you were a named driver on multiple policies or the policyholder changed insurance company while you were named, you will need to get proof of your named driving experience from each insurer separately.
