Home insurance cover

Unusual and surprising items included

Aviva offers different types of home insurance cover to suit your needs including buildings and contents insurance or contents only insurance. Do you know what covers are included? You might be surprised!

What does home insurance cover?

While you might believe that insurance only covers a small range of specific items and insured events, we know things aren’t always that simple. Here are some life events and items that you might not realise are covered by your home insurance with Aviva, subject to certain limits.

New baby contents cover

Any parent will tell you that your house seems to shrink when you have a baby. Small children need their own equipment, gadgets and furniture. You’ll have your hands full with your new arrival, and to help protect your new purchases, Aviva will provide cover for new baby contents. This falls under the "Events Insured" of the Aviva HomeCare policy booklet.

This means we'll automatically increase your contents sum insured by 10% for each new baby, starting 30 days before the due date and continuing for 30 days after the birth.

Christmas cover

Christmas can be an expensive time, and with extra presents about, some homes might need extra insurance. That's why Aviva will boost your contents sum insured by 10% for the month of December each year.

Wedding cover

Wedding days are magical, but can also be stressful!. And the last thing you want to worry about is something happening to all those wedding gifts in the house.

Our HomeCare policy automatically increases your contents sum insured by 10% for 30 days before and after the wedding.

If you happen to have a wedding coming up, have you got your engagement ring covered?

Credit and Debit cards cover

More than ever, we’re living in a cashless society, as credit and debit cards take over from notes and coins. While this means more convenience, it also increases the impact of losing your debit or credit card, as we depend on those slivers of plastic more and more.

Aviva also provides cover for credit and debit cards: if you or any family member (who lives permanently with you) become legally liable for costs following the loss of your credit or debit cards, we will pay these costs up to the amount shown in your policy schedule. This cover applies within Europe and for 30 days anywhere else in the world during the period of insurance.

Fire brigade charges cover

Unfortunately, fires in the home can happen, and so can the charge for putting it out. But with Aviva’s fire brigade charges cover, it will be one less thing to worry about through this already unsettling time.

It’s reassuring to know that Aviva will cover the charges of a fire authority to control or put out a fire affecting (or likely to affect) your home.

Electric vehicle charging points cover

By now, you’ve probably seen plenty of EVs gliding along our roads or charging in driveways. Interest in electric vehicles and ownership is soaring, partly due to the Irish government's climate action plan to introduce 945,000 electric cars by 2030.

If you own an electric car, or you’re planning on making the switch, you’ll be happy to know accidental damage to your electric vehicle charging points installed within the boundaries of your buildings is covered by your Aviva home insurance policy.

Frozen food cover

A faulty fridge or a power cut can be very stressful. It can also lead to spoiling food, which is not just costly, but a huge nuisance and waste.

With Aviva home insurance, food in a domestic freezer at your home is covered. This means we will cover loss or damage to frozen food caused by a rise or fall in temperature, refrigerant leaking or refrigerant fumes.

You can reduce food waste at home by freezing leftovers, learn how to and what foods to freeze.

Household removal loss or damage to your contents

Whether you’ve bought a new house or you’re heading into a rental property, moving home can be both exciting and challenging. Once you’ve made that all important decision it’s nice to know that there’s cover with Aviva for that too. While moving, and if you have hired a professional removals company, Aviva will insure:

  • Contents during household removal;
  • Loss or damage to your contents while they are being moved by professional removal contractors between your home and your new permanent home in the Republic of Ireland or Northern Ireland.

And don’t forget to review your home insurance needs for your new property.

Falling items

There’s nothing like a mishap with gravity to bring you down to earth! Falling items happen, and Aviva has you covered for falling aerials, masts, satellite dishes or security cameras, including damage to these.

Jury service cover

If you’re an Irish citizen, aged 18 or over, you might be called for jury service. After that, you might serve on a jury, which involves attending a court case and hearing all of the evidence. A trial can last weeks, which can have a financial impact on your life.

With Aviva, we will pay the daily benefit shown in your schedule for each day or part of a day that you or your partner go to court for jury service.

It gets better: A claim under this section will not affect your no-claim bonus and you will not have to pay an excess under this benefit.
