As the Riddett family’s incredible Great Aviva Road Trip came to a close, day 10 proved to be the perfect finale, filled with history, heritage, and high-flying excitement. Their last stops included a journey back in time at Craggaunowen Castle and Crannog, followed by a fascinating dive into aviation history at the Shannon Aviation Museum
Exploring the Past at Craggaunowen Castle & Crannog
The day began with a visit to Craggaunowen, where the Riddetts were warmly welcomed by Pauline, a longtime staff member with over 30 years’ experience. The family was instantly charmed by the picturesque surroundings and eager to learn more about Ireland’s ancient history.
Emma and Alex were thrilled to meet the interactive chieftain and druid, played by Tony, who mesmerized the entire family with his engaging storytelling and historical facts. Tony’s performance was full of fun, and he even introduced the family to Maggie the hen, much to Emma’s delight.
Another highlight was meeting Jack, a talented woodturner who showcased his craftsmanship and taught the family how utensils were made in ancient times. The Riddetts were fascinated by his skill and creativity, adding yet another layer of appreciation for Ireland’s rich heritage.
Steve, Michelle, Emma, and Alex also explored the castle itself, climbing up to take in the views and navigating secret passageways. They were particularly intrigued by the Brendan boat, a fascinating piece of history that left a lasting impression. And no trip to Craggaunowen would be complete without following the enchanting Fairy Trail, where the family solved clues and uncovered hidden secrets along the way.
“We absolutely loved Craggaunowen. It was not only beautiful but a fun and engaging way to learn about our Irish heritage. The kids had a blast, and the people we met, like Tony, Jack, and Mary in the café, made it a day we’ll never forget,” said Michelle.

Taking to the Skies at Shannon Aviation Museum
In the afternoon, the Riddetts made their way to the Shannon Aviation Museum, where Steve’s excitement reached new heights—literally! As a huge aviation enthusiast, he had been looking forward to this visit, and it did not disappoint.
Upon arrival, the family received a warm welcome from sisters Sarah and Jane, who ensured the experience started off on a high note. The kids were especially excited to try their hands at the flight simulator, feeling like real pilots as they soared through virtual skies.
Guided by Jack and Adam, the family learned about the fascinating history of aviation in Ireland, from the modified buccaneer with a tornado nose to the piper and cessna training planes on display. Steve was particularly captivated by the BD3 microjet, one of the first passenger jets used in Ireland. The kids, meanwhile, soaked up every bit of information Jack and Adam shared, learning surprising facts about the Irish Airforce and the incredible history of aviation.
“We had an absolutely brilliant time at the Shannon Aviation Museum. Jack and Adam were so passionate and knowledgeable, answering all our questions. Steve was in his element, and the kids loved trying the flight simulator,” Michelle said, laughing at how the museum quickly became a family favourite.
