New driver number rules

What you need to know before 31st March 2025

From 31st March 2025, drivers in Ireland will need to provide their driver number when buying or renewing car insurance. This new requirement is part of a government initiative to enhance road safety and combat uninsured driving.

At Aviva, we want to make this transition as smooth as possible for our customers. Below, we explain what’s changing, why it’s happening, and what you’ll need to do.

What’s Changing?

When you buy or renew your motor insurance, you’ll need to provide:

  • Your driver number (found on Section 4(d) of your Irish driving licence or learner permit) and
  • The driver number for any named driver(s) on your policy

Insurance companies, including Aviva, will not be able to issue a policy without this information.

Why is This Happening?

This rule is being introduced to strengthen the Irish Motor Insurance Database, which is updated daily and helps the gardaí quickly identify uninsured vehicles. By having access to information gardaí can quickly verify if a driver holds a valid licence and if the vehicle is insured, making the roads safer for everyone.

This new requirement is an important step in tackling uninsured driving. At Aviva, we fully support measures that make the roads safer while ensuring a fairer system for insured drivers. We encourage all customers to check their driving licence and have their driver number ready when it’s time to renew.

What Do You Need to Do?

  • If you’re renewing or taking out a new motor insurance policy, be prepared to supply your driver number and those of any named driver(s) on your policy.

Where Can I Find My Driver Number?

Your driver number is located in Section 4(d) of your Irish driving licence or learner permit and is a unique number that is only assigned to you. See the image below for where to find your driver number.
